Abstract
The heavy chain of the hemagglutinin from the Hong Kong variant A/Memphis/102/72 was examined to establish which of the six oliogosaccharide units on the polypeptide cross-react with host antigen. Cyanogen bromide and enzymatic digests were fractionated and the resulting peptides tested for their ability to bind to antibodies raised against uninfected chick chorioallantoic membranes. The results obtained show that two of the six oligosaccharide units are antigenically related to the host antigen. These are theN-acetyllactosamine type carbohydrate units attached at asparagine residues 8 and 22 in this Hong Kong hemagglutinin heavy chain.
